Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to do to start climbing? To get started climbing you need to come in and be willing to try it. Simple. Specifically, you will need to complete a waiver, pay admission, get some gear, and take a belay class.
What is belaying? Belaying is managing the rope that is attached to the person you are climbing with. As a belayer, you are responsible for arresting (stopping) a partner's fall and lowering them to the ground when they have finished a climb. We can teach you to properly belay in approximately one hour. Click here for more information on belay classes at Granite Arch.

Is there a minimum age? We recommend that kids be at least 5 to play in Adventure Village and to climb. That said, we have had kids as young as 3 climb with a special full-body harness. Many kids are natural climbers and instinctively know what to do when they walk up to the wall!
Is climbing safe? The short answer is NO! Whether you're climbing indoors or outdoors, the sport of climbing involves risk. Some risk can be minimized and some of it cannot-- the element of risk is part of climbing's appeal to us. As climbers and belayers, it is our job to manage and minimize that risk whenever, and wherever, possible by using appropriate gear, techniques, paying attention, choose your climbing partners carefully, and always double--and even triple--checking one another.
Who can sign a waiver? If you're over 18, you can sign your own waiver. If not, your parent or legal guardian must sign. Click here to download or complete and submit an online waiver: WAIVER

What is bouldering? Bouldering is ropeless climbing on walls that reach about 12 feet tall at Granite Arch. This lets you practice climbing without a belayer or the fear of being too high. Bouldering is a great way to start climbing and work on technique and strength.
