Youth Climbing Coach

 

Location: Granite Arch Climbing Center
Hours: 8–10 hours/week during the semester; optional 25–30 hours/week available during summer programs
Schedule: Monday-Friday; morning and afternoon/evening shifts available

About the Position

Granite Arch Climbing Center is seeking enthusiastic, reliable, and positive individuals to join our coaching team! As a Youth Climbing Coach, you will work with kids ages 7–18 in a variety of structured indoor climbing programs. We provide full training, no prior coaching or climbing experience required, though both are highly valued and desired for this role.

This role is perfect for someone who loves working with kids, enjoys movement-based activities, and wants to make a meaningful impact by teaching confidence, resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving through the sport of climbing.

Holidays are off, and all training, certifications, and professional development are paid.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor youth climbers ages 7–18 in classes, clubs, and specialized programs

  • Teach foundational climbing techniques, movement skills, and risk management

  • Lead warm-ups, stretching, and group activities that promote teamwork and physical literacy

  • Provide positive reinforcement, clear instruction, and individualized support to climbers of all skill levels

  • Assist with class setup, breakdown, and smooth transitions between activities

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and structured environment at all times

  • Communicate professionally with parents, kids, and fellow coaches

  • Attend required trainings and uphold all safety and behavioral standards

  • Commit to one full semester (approximately 12 weeks), with opportunities for expanded hours coaching other youth programs we run as well as summer camps

 

Desired Skills & Qualifications

Experience (Preferred, Not Required):

  • Background and experience in rock climbing (indoor or outdoor)

  • Experience coaching, mentoring, or teaching youth

  • CPR/First Aid certification (a plus, but not required)

Ideal Candidate Qualities:

  • Enjoys working with kids and teens

  • Highly reliable, punctual, and organized

  • Positive, enthusiastic, and professional demeanor

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to lead groups and manage high-energy environments

  • Team player who collaborates well with staff and follows direction

  • Growth mindset with willingness to learn and receive feedback

  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build trust with youth participants

  • Passion for helping kids build confidence, resilience, and lifelong skills

  • Problem-solving ability and composure under pressure

  • Ability to maintain attention on students and ensure safety throughout class

  • Strong role-model qualities and a commitment to youth development

 

Requirements

  • Ability to work both morning and afternoon/evening shifts as scheduled

  • Commitment to a full semester minimum

  • Completion of a LiveScan fingerprinting and background check prior to start date

  • Must be at least 16 years old
