Workload: Part Time; ~29 hours/week

Basis: At will, hourly, non-exempt

Pay: $20 - 23/hour based on experience level

About this position:

Since 1996, Granite Arch has served the Sacramento area as a hub for the local climbing community. With our uniquely constructed natural walls, our welcoming environment, and our emphasis on high-quality youth programming, we have found a strong community that we’re committed to continually investing into. 

 

We’re looking for a Staff Manager to oversee the day-to-day customer-facing operations that maintain our crucial relationship with our community. In practice, this means selecting, training, and managing our front counter and event staff, as well as helping to develop new policies, programs, and promotions as one of the four pillars of our management team alongside the Facilities Manager, Programs Director, and gym ownership.

Duties:

  • Execute selection, onboarding, and training of new staff, with approval from gym ownership

  • Model and uphold morale and work ethic for other staff

  • Act as the Human Resources touchpoint for staff with questions, concerns, or grievances

  • Create, distribute, and actively update a monthly schedule for front counter and events

  • Assess performance of gym policies, programming, and staff to determine if, when, and how they may need to change, then make appropriate and timely changes

  • Write and distribute occasional memos and messages in addition to running occasional meetings to keep staff up to date on organizational goings-on

  • Facilitate coverage of shifts in cases of changing staff availability

  • Maintain knowledge of the classes we offer and be able to teach them whenever necessary

  • Manage booking and staffing of third-party events such as birthday parties, school groups, and overnighters

  • Plan and staff occasional special gym events such as competitions, clinics, and theme nights

  • Function as a member of our front counter and event teams, maintaining an exact and practical understanding of how policy and procedure meet the reality of customer interaction

  • Function as a member of the management team, lending your experience and perspective to important organizational decisions, as well as occasionally assisting other managers with work in their departments

  • Understand, follow, and enforce all staff policies and procedures as stipulated in the employee manual

Qualifications:

Required

 

  • At least 18 years old

  • Toprope belay experience

  • Prior experience in a customer service-focused industry (food service, fitness, hospitality, retail, adventure recreation, etc.)

  • Ability to work occasional odd hours, evenings, and weekends to facilitate shift coverage or event management

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Minimum 6 months experience in leadership

  • Strong administrative skills, including effective verbal/written communication, organization, and workplace professionalism

  • Working understanding of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and other such software

  • Ability to efficiently and creatively solve complex social and procedural problems

  • Availability and ability to work shifts of all types in order to keep your finger on the pulse of different customer groups and community subgroups

Not Required, but Preferred

 

  • Prior employment at a full-service climbing gym

  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certificate or equivalent from CWA, AMGA, or other reputable certifying body

  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification

  • Prior experience in management in a service-focused organization

  • Experience with lead climbing and belaying

  • Experience with Rock Gym Pro software

Compensation:

 

  • Hourly wages, as noted above

Programs Director

About this position:

We’re looking for a Programs Director to oversee the continuation of our youth programs’ legacy, as well as the development of a catalog of new adult-focused programming. In practice, this means holding responsibility for end-to-end management of all youth and adult programs, including assessing community needs for new programming, developing curriculum to fit community needs, creating a program schedule, setting prices, selecting staff, training staff, creating promotional materials, managing program enrollment, keeping non-program staff up to date on program changes, directly interfacing with program participants (and parents), filling in for coaches/instructors when necessary, collecting feedback, and making changes and improvements where necessary. Additionally, the Programs Director will be expected to contribute to high-level decision making as one of the four pillars of our management team alongside the Staff Manager, Facilities Manager, and gym ownership.

Programs managed by the Programs Director:

  • Competitive Youth Team (~10-18)

  • Recreational Youth Team (10-18)

  • Introductory Youth Club (7-12)

  • Homeschool Climbing PE Class (7-18)

  • Summer Camp (7-12)

  • Upcoming adult programs (still in development)

Not Required, but Preferred

 

  • Prior employment at a full-service climbing gym

  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certificate or equivalent from CWA, AMGA, or other reputable certifying body.

  • Knowledge of strength training and injury prevention for rock climbing

  • Maintain an exact and practical understanding of the programs we offer so that you could act as a substitute for any coach or instructor on short notice

  • Maintain familiarity with tasks and expectations for non-program staff so that you can cover any shift if necessary

  • Function as a member of the management team, lending your experience and perspective to important organizational

  • decisions, as well as occasionally assisting other managers with work in their departments.
